This page explains who Rwendo is for, what content younger users will encounter, and the safety mechanisms built into the app. It is published primarily for App Store reviewers and parents or guardians of younger users.

Who Rwendo is for

Rwendo is a language learning and personal growth app. The core experience — language courses, the "Build Yourself" curriculum (sleep, self-knowledge, parenting, caring for an aging parent), and the AI companion Rwen — is designed to be appropriate for users from age 9 upward.

Some features are restricted to users aged 18 and over. Those features are listed below.

Minimum signup age

The minimum age to create an account depends on the jurisdiction the user selects during onboarding:

• United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Zimbabwe, Philippines: 13
• European Union: 16

These minimums reflect privacy law (COPPA in the US, UK and EU GDPR), not the content rating. The app's content is rated 9+ but signup is gated by data-protection rules.

What users will encounter

All users (9+)

• Language learning lessons across multiple courses — vocabulary, grammar, dialogue practice, cultural notes.
• The "Build Yourself" deep-engine courses (sleep habits, knowing yourself, parenting under pressure, caring for an aging parent, biblical Greek).
• Conversations with the AI companion Rwen — a warm, attentive assistant for learning and reflection. Rwen's responses are guardrailed: no explicit content, no medical or treatment advice, no harmful instructions.
• Travel vocabulary and cultural guides for the user's chosen destination — includes incidental references to alcohol at restaurants and bars (e.g., "I would like a beer", "white wine"), reflecting real-world travel scenarios. No tobacco or drug references.
• Personal-progress mechanics: experience points, daily goals, streaks, achievements. These are solo goals, not competitive rankings.

Users aged 18 and over

These features are hidden behind a hard age gate. Users whose recorded date of birth places them under 18 cannot see or access them.

• Travel Connections — a public feed where adult travellers can post text and photos about upcoming trips, follow other travellers, like and comment on posts. Comments are public, not private direct messages.
• Aria — an optional romantic-companion AI persona. Aria is one persona among many; users must explicitly select it. Aria's system prompt enforces a firm content boundary: no explicit sexual content under any circumstances. Conversations remain at the level of warmth, encouragement, and emotional intimacy, not graphic material.

Age assurance

The age gates above rely on the user's recorded date of birth, captured during onboarding. This is self-attested but is required at signup and used consistently to control access to age-restricted features.

AI safety

The AI companion (Rwen and any persona variants) operates under several layered safeguards:

• Crisis detection. User messages are screened against pattern libraries covering suicidal ideation, self-harm, domestic violence, mental-health distress, and youth-specific risk. When a critical pattern is detected, the app surfaces local crisis resources for the user's jurisdiction before the AI responds.
• No medical or treatment advice. Wellness courses cover lifestyle topics (sleep habits, self-knowledge); the AI does not diagnose conditions or prescribe treatment. If a user asks for medical guidance, they are directed to a qualified professional.
• No explicit content. The romantic-companion persona has a hard-coded prohibition on explicit sexual material.

Crisis resources

Rwendo bundles crisis-line numbers for each supported jurisdiction. For example:

• United Kingdom: Samaritans (116 123), Shout (text 85258), Childline (0800 1111), Refuge (0808 2000 247).
• United States, Australia, EU: Equivalent national lines, surfaced based on the user's jurisdiction.

These resources are shown immediately when crisis content is detected in a user message, and are also available in the app's support section.

User-generated content (18+ only)

The Travel Connections feed is the only user-generated-content surface in the app. Posts are visible to other adult travellers using the feature. Rwendo is actively expanding moderation tooling for this feed; report and block flows are being added in the next release.

Advertising

Rwendo contains no third-party advertising. The app is funded by subscription only (no in-app purchases of randomized items, no loot boxes, no real-money wagering).
